Why no list?

Many researchers ask for a list of non-compliant journals. We have not provided this for several reasons, not least it is inappropriate to suggest that particular journals are ‘better’ than others.

The SHERPA/FACT Funders & Authors Compliance Tool  can help researchers determine whether their chosen journal will allow them to comply with the particular funder.

We strongly advise that researchers simply upload their manuscripts, as the Open Access team is highly skilled in this area, and can easily resolve any issues.

What happens if my journal is not compliant?

Note that if a researcher publishes in a journal where compliance with the REF Open Access policy is not possible due to the publisher conditions, we note this as an exception for REF2021.  By submitting manuscripts to www.openaccess.cam.ac.uk  researchers complete their compliance requirements for the post-2014 Research Excellence Framework as HEFCE exceptions are allowed.

If a researcher publishes in a journal where compliance with British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK,  Research Councils/UKRI or Wellcome Trust's policy is not possible due to the publisher conditions, we note this as a failure with the policy.
